"You don't have to work with him," Two-Face muttered. "They guy's unfortunately the best debt collector I've ever met, and he's got a scientific calculator hardwired into his brain. But he makes up for it by being able to piss me off more than almost anyone else in local organised crime."
His voice was slow as he replied. "I don't think so. These were... special."
Two-Face suddenly looked at her coldly. "Are you trying to hit on me? Because I'm not in the mood. And frankly, I'm not interested."

Olivia dropped her hand back into her lap and let out a little huff. "Not everything is about sex, Two-Face. I was attempting to give you a compliment which is now apparently illegal. Won't make that mistake again."
She rose from the couch and went to pick up the groceries she had abandoned. "Need more tequila while I'm up? I'm sure there's some stashed in here somewhere." As she waited for him to respond, she began putting the milk, eggs and various other items into the fridge.

Two-Face threw her a filthy look but otherwise didn't respond. He stared down at the floor as Olivia begn to put away the groceries, refusing the offer of more tequila with a half-hearted grunt.
It was a long moment before he spoke again. His voice was quiet and bleak. "Why do you love him? Harvey, I mean."
He gazed into middle distance, speaking almost to himself. "What is it that makes a person fall in love, anyway? To let somebody else in that far, to change the way you look at the world... maybe he was right. Maybe all it does is hold you back. Make you like everyone else."

The question caught Olivia off guard. She moved back into the living room and sank back onto the couch next to Two-Face, tucking one leg beneath her. She rested her elbow on the back of the couch and leaned her head against her open palm.
"There's just something about him." She replied, smiling slightly. "He's different from any man I've ever been with and he loves me so completely. He keeps me on my toes and is just...Harvey."
She bit her lip, unsure of how to respond. "I don't think love holds you back." She said quietly after a long moment. "I mean, there are times where it really sucks but the good outweighs the bad." She gazed sadly at him. It was painful to see him so depressed. "I'm sorry he hurt you, Two-Face. You don't deserve that."

A black look crept into Two-Face's eyes; somewhere between anger and jealousy. "Yeah. He loves you." His eyes flicked to her. "So basically you love him because he loves you. That doesn't sound like a two-way relationship to me."
His gaze darkened even further, his voice low and bitter. "Who's to say who deserves what? Harvey loved Gilda and she left him. He didn't deserve that either. Not that I was ever fond of Gilda. I couldn't stand her."
He was quiet for a moment. "Joker demands that he's the centre of people's world. The people he wants around him anyway. The rest might as well not exist. But the people he wants with him... they have to adore him and him alone. But as soon as he starts feeling something real, something genuine, he can't bear it. That's why he ended it."
He looked down. "Joker doesn't want a lover. He wants a slave. Someone he can control. Someone who'll worship him and give him all the attention he craves, but never ask anything in return."
He sighed. "I should sleep. Or eat. Or both. But I can't be bothered to do either."

"That's not what I meant." She snapped. "Can't you take anything the right way? I've been in a relationship before where he didn't give me the same sort of love and affection Harvey did. Yes, he said the words but there was no feeling behind it. I love Harvey because of who he is. I love his humor, his smile, his everything. So don't you dare think for a second that I don't love him."
Memories of lying in the snow with Bruce flashed through Olivia's mind and she clenched her jaw. Guilt and confusion threatened to overwhelm her but she shoved them back. Later. She'd deal with that situation later.
She watched him as he spoke about Joker. "Joker has issues, Two-Face. He's a narcissist that can't face real emotions, but you know that. I...I can't even imagine how you must be feeling right now. I'm so sorry."
She reached out and squeezed his shoulder. "The offer still stands if you want me to make or order you something."

Two-Face looked at her curiously. "Really, with who? Let's be all girlie and talk about boys." He paused for a moment "No, it's not working. I still don't have a feminine side. It's the one area of this whole duality thing where I fail miserably."
He gazed at her steadily. "You know he's wrong for you, don't you? He'll never be able to make you happy."
Two-Face's eyes narrowed slightly as Olivia went on, but he nodded slightly. "Is that your professional opinion, Doctor Hale? I don't think there's a word for what the Joker is. You can't box him up and slot him neatly into a case file. The last person who did that went stark raving insane, so you may want to avoid trying."
His expression darkened. "She's back, you know. Harleen Quinzel. Dressed like a reject from America's Next Hot Topic Model and behving like a lovesick puppy trotting round after its master."

Olivia shrugged. "Nobody important. Don't worry about it."
She looked down at her lap, struck by the truth of his statement. It was hopelessly frustrating to be torn between titans. "We'll see." She said softly. "We're in love...that's got to count for something."
Olivia laughed humorlessly. "I wouldn't want to try to figure him out. I'm not surprised she's back, to be honest. She was never completely normal. I think she was just waiting for someone like Joker to take her in."
Olivia fell back against the arm of the couch and stared up at the ceiling. "What's America's Next Hot Topic Model? Is it like the one with Tyra Banks but with goth clothes? It sounds amusing."

Two-Face threw her a scornful look. "Love. I'm not in the right mood to be swayed by arguments about love right now."
A black stab of jealousy coursed through him when he thought that Quinzel - or Quinn, as she now was - was still with Joker.
"She's changed since you last saw her," he muttered. "She's changed her name too. She's Harley Quinn now. Sort of a demented court jester crossed with a BDSM sub. She calls him 'Mister J'. At least in front of others." He brooded for a moment. "I guess you could call her a sidekick."
He picked up the tequila bottle aginst toyed iwth it disinterestedly. "I don't know, I just made it up right now. Fuck, I'm drunk."
He leaned his head against the back of the sofa and closed his eyes for a moment.

"She's always been a little crazy. I'm really not that surprised that she's gone off her rocker."
Olivia sighed and sat up. "Why don't you just go to bed? I don't think sleeping on the couch is going to make you feel much better."

Two-Face had already passed out by the time Olivia spoke again. Nearly two minutes passed before Harvey awoke and gingerly raised a hand to his temple. He massaged it in slow circles, wincing at the light slanting through the large windows of the living room.
"That was a bad one. He feels like a migraine headache on his worst days."
He sat up slowly at looked at Olivia. "I think he's heartbroken," he said quietly. "He's never felt like that before. This is going to be ugly."

When Olivia realized Two-Face was asleep she sighed and picked up his bottle of tequila. "Useless." She muttered. She took the bottle into the living room, downed the rest of it and then tossed it into the recycling bin. She was straightening up the kitchen when a voice came from the living room.
She poured a glass of water and walked back into the living room. With a small smile she offered it to him and sank down onto the couch. "Just tell him to keep his hands off me if he ever wants to procreate. I feel for you, Harv. I haven't even known you that long and can already tell that things are going to be rough."
She leaned over and kissed his cheek gently. "I love you."
