As Harvey questioned her, Harley looked up, crossing her arms awkwardly over her chest. 'My boss has gone insane,' she stated, sounding more confident than she had the whole night, 'I have an asylum to get back to and run.'

Harvey gave a tiny smile. "Are you sure? I'll admit the hours are bad, but organised crime has its own rewards in terms of the pay packet. I can see you a gangster's moll, I really can."
He paused, musing to himself. "That's if Crane's still even alive. Whatever that stuff was, it was nothing like I've seen before. And believe me, I've seen some burnouts..."
He looked at her again, his voice sincere but curious. "What do you think it was? In your professional opinion."

The comment caused Harley to shift awkwardly in her seat. As a child she'd entertained dreams of being arm candy to a glitzy conman but when she'd got a closer look at her father's profession, she'd quickly turned against the idea. Considering that Crane might be dead definitely posed some interesting options for Harley but she did her best to keep her face expressionless.
'It's a hallucinogen, that much is clear but what exactly it is...' she shrugged her shoulders. 'Crane's specialty is pharmacology - he could have put anything in it.'

Harvey nodded. "When I was held there, people used to talk about something happening in Crane's offices." his mouth twisted: "Something worse than the everyday treatments, I mean. None of us ever knew what happened down there. But the ones who came back were like zombies..." His gaze grew dak as he remembered. "They'd just sit there staring at the walls for days. And they used to only say one thing - Scarecrow."
He was silent for a long minute, his face brooding. "Could it have been something like zombie powder? I'm not much on folklore, but there was a film I saw in the 80s about a pharmacologist who went to Haiti looking for ingedients for a new anaesthetic. Apparently Duvalier had people using plant-based poisons to create catatonia and panic. Might not be anything in it, but it's a thought."

Listening to his words, Harley nodded slightly. She had her fair share of second-hand patients who muttered about things that only made sense now Crane's true nature had been revealed. She'd hated him, of course, but she had never thought he was really as messed up as the inmates believed. It seemed she'd been wrong.
'They'll be more of that stuff in the asylum,' she murmured, 'we'll have it checked.'

Harvey fixed his gaze on her. "And what will you do with it once you've checked it?"
His voice took on a faintly calculating note: "In fact, what are you planning to do with Crane, assuming he's still alive?"
Harvey glanced up at a signpost and took a left hand turn. "I was surprised at your reactions back there. You didn't want me to shoot him, but then you didn't do anything to save him when Olivia started CPR. In two minds about him?"

'Destroy it and commit him,' Harley replied coldly and simply. The prospect of him as a patient was like Christmas for her and Harley was almost relishing the fact that he'd lost his mind. The question about her actions at the motel caused her to look down at her lap, again confronting the ugly side of herself she was trying to ignore. 'I hate Jonathan Crane, and just thought a gunshot was too quick a way for him to go.'

Harvey nodded absently. "There's a certain symmetry to that idea. I like it." I occured to him that what she was describing wasn't too far removed from what his own plans had been at the asylum the previous night. Fate was a funny thing... but probably not funny in the sense that Joker would approve of.
He gave a short, mirthless laugh. "That's harsh. But I can't disagree with you."
Harvey took a side road, driving towards a small town. "By the way, let me know if you want the heating on back there or anything."

Idly fiddling with her ring, Harley almost smiled at the bizarreness of the situation she was in. She was in a car with a patient, or ex-patient as she supposed he was now, and a man who had been quite ready to pump her full of insulin a few hours earlier and they were all being perfectly pleasant. Telling herself it was probably just a natural psychological aspect of being kidnapped and that she'd go back to being sane when they let her go, Harley raised her eyes, nodding her head slightly.
'How are you planning to get clothes?' she questioned, 'half of Gotham will be looking for you.'

"Actually," Harvey said, "I was rather hoping you could be of assistance. Now, I could pull up in front of a store, have you go in for us and keep a gun trained on you through the window, but frankly I don't have the energy." He shrugged "or the inclination, truth be told."
He looked at her in the mirror again, meeting her gaze. "I think, Doctor Quinzel, that you and I might actually be on the same side."

As Harvey met her eye in the mirror, Harley tried to focus on the good side of his face, not liking the way the more exposed eyeball looked when it was staring at you. If she was to be honest to herself, she knew she wouldn't try and sell them out to the police before they let her go as it posed too much of a risk to herself but she wasn't in the habit of just letting criminals know she'd be happy to aid them.
'Oh? And how do you figure that?'

Harvey's voice was calm as he replied. "Just a hunch. But you have to admit, we share a certain attitude towards Dr Crane's work."
Harvey drove along the back roads of the town, avoiding Main Street.
"Why do you hate him so much?" he asked, his tone conversational.

At the question, Harley shifted uncomfortably in her seat. She hadn't liked Crane from the moment she first met him, having fond something chilling about his general manner from the start and her dislike had only become stronger the longer she'd known him. Ever since she'd had to knock boots with him to get her job, Harley had been even more wary of him, having been creeped out by his constant discussion of fear. Shrugging her shoulders slightly, Harley hugged her arms. 'He's just a nasty, self-absorbed piece of work.'

Harvey nodded. "He hasn't changed much, then. I knew him at Gotham University. Well, I say knew him. We were acquaintances more than friends."
Harvey brought the car to a stop in a side street. He twisted round in the driver's seat and looked her full in the face. "Did you honestly have no idea about this Scarecrow thing? I can't speak for anyone else in the cells, but I always thought the staff must have known more than they were letting on."

When Harvey turned around, Harley looked up, shaking her head slightly. 'Some of the patients would say they were scared of Crane but... I didn't think he was actually doing anything more than just being himself.' There were times when Harley should have checked up on what her patients had told her, but she knew that questioning Crane would have been the quickest way to get herself fired.
