Appearance: Standing at a perfectly average height of 5’6” with an average build, it should be suspected that Zatanna looks like any other average person. However, her distinctive good looks prevent her from appearing anything close to average. Her hair is dark and her eyes bright blue, creating a striking contrast that attracts people instantly to her eyes. She is often seen in a showgirl style magician’s outfit, reminiscent of a ringmaster’s outfit and similar to her father’s costume. It consists of fishnet tights, white stilettos, a ruffled white shirt, black high-waisted knicker shorts, a fitted tailcoat and finished off with a black top hat and cane.
Personality: Confident and raised to be independent, Zatanna is something of a flirt, often charming her patrons or people she meets in the bar with no intention of following anything through. She is a natural performer and thus enjoys being the centre of attention, not appreciating it when others take the limelight from her. She is convinced she needs no one else to validate or complete her and has thus adopted a loner personality, only added to with her night owl tendencies.
Special Abilities: Zatanna is a competent illusionist, able to create such complex tricks that even the most skeptical of audience members sometimes declare that it can only be true magic. Part of this is thanks to Zatanna’s showmanship, but also thanks in part to inherited magical abilities Zatanna has gained from her mother. Although Zatanna does not believe in these abilities, sometimes she does amaze herself with her illusions. In addition, Zatanna has displayed skills of accurate divination through the use of a deck of tarot cards. She is a trained hypnotist and also has an expansive knowledge of the occult.
History: Born the only child of Giovanni ‘John’ Zatara and his wife Sindella Zatara, Zatanna was exposed to a great lineage and fame. A direct descendant of Leonardo da Vinci and related paternally to Nostradamus; Alessandro Cagliostro; Nicholas Flamel and Evan Fulcanelli. Her mother’s background was less distinguished but hailed to roots in several occult hotspots from around the world. But Zatanna was destined not to know her mother, as Sindellla was declared dead a mere few hours after her daughter’s birth. In actual fact, Sindella was not dead at all but had fled Gotham in fear of her life thanks to an old family rivalry that was threatening to rear its head. To protect Zatanna, John never told his daughter the truth about her mother and instead continued to pretend that his wife was dead. When she failed to ever return, he began to believe it had become the truth.
With her father still at the height of his fame as a stage magician, Zatanna spent her youth touring the country with him, picking up his skills as she grew up. Being exposed to the stage life so completely, Zatanna came to adore performing and would hassle her father to train her into an assistant when she should have been studying. Home schooled due to their living arrangements, Zatanna’s father focused on what interested him and so his daughter received a rather unbalanced education, leaving her well tutored in literature, philosophy, religious studies and the liberal arts and rather inept at mathematics and practical work. The gap in her schooling did not bother the young Zatara and she grew up in a confident teenager, making friends in every city they stopped at and bonded with her father’s production crew.
When they were back home, the Zataras socialized with the royalty of Gotham - the Waynes. Zatanna was only a few months older than the Wayne's son, Bruce, so the pair would often play together in the grounds of the Waynes' manor. When Bruce's parents were killed when the children were eight, Zatanna did her best to comfort her greiving friend, convincing her father to spend more time in Gotham. When Bruce left to be schooled elsewhere aged 12, Zatanna became lonely and began touring again with her father, returning home whenever she could to see if Bruce was also in Gotham.
For her sixteenth birthday, John Zatara planned a dazzling soiree. He invited every friend the young Zatanna had made and had them flown to Gotham for the event, swearing them to secrecy. When Zatanna arrived in her chauffeured car to what she thought was a dinner with her father, she was surprised to see the entire building hired and decorated in her favourite style – like a circus ring. Giant posters informed her and the guests that the party was also to display the premiere of John Zatara’s newest and most brilliant illusion. When the time came for John’s show, all eyes were on the magician as he locked himself into his ‘chain cabinet’ and had the curtain pulled around him. Sure enough, when the curtain was opened, John Zatara was gone and the crowd went wild with applause. However, John never reappeared. A police search was launched when he was still missing two days later but yielded no results.
Only sixteen, Zatanna became a ward of the state, living with her cousin Zachary in New York as she tried to cope with the sudden loss of her father. For two years, she became a recluse, locking herself away and studying every text on the occult she could get her hands on. She learnt hypnotism and practiced on Zachary, also discovering her fortune telling abilities at about this time. When she was eighteen, Zatanna decided she had been away from the stage life for two long and organized a debut show in which she would establish herself as a worthy heir to her father’s legacy. Hooked again on the thrill of performance, Zatanna instantly began following in her father’s footsteps and started touring, achieving great fame in the industry.
Having been performing now for nine years, Zatanna has decided to take a well-earned break from long haul travelling and has moved back to Gotham to see if she can settle down.
