Full Name: Harleen Francis Quinzel
Alias: Harley Quinn
Birthday: September 11th 1983
Age: 27
Hometown: Bensonhurst, Brooklyn
Appearance: At 5'3" and with bleached blonde hair, Harley looks like a little ditzy pushover. Her natural hair is a dark ginger but continual bleaching since high school has made the blonde seem more suited and natural looking on her. She has a petite, unimposing frame and big blue eyes that only make her look even more like a young child. Her smile is large and always sincere, seeming to break out across her entire face.
Personality: Although she may seem like a push-over to those who first meet her, Harley is incredibly driven and can be manipulative if needs be. She can be incredibly focused and dedicated on long term plans or ideals but in her day to day life can be distracted rather easily. Harley is pretty and she knows it and is not above using her physical assets to further her success.
Special Abilities: Gaining her PhD in Psychology from Gotham University has given Harley a special edge more than that of her gymnastic skills which, though brilliant, are rarely useful.
History: Born in Brooklyn to a Catholic mother, Sharon and Jewish father, Richard, Harleen was the eldest child. Her first years were spent being spoilt by her besotted parents who would do anything for their little girl and rarely reign in her behavior. By the time her brother Barry was born, when Harley was six years old, she believed she was entitled to whatever she wanted. Barry’s birth made her parents stricter on her but Harley was not one to take this disadvantage lying down. She learnt how to be cunning and how to manipulate her parents so she still always got her way. Growing up, she was the ‘rich’ girl in school, despite the fact her parents weren’t actually all that rich. Her father was a con artist who made his money in bursts instead of providing a steady income and her mother only worked a few shifts in a local diner to ensure some money was available for food if a con didn’t come off right.
Trying to ignore the circumstances around her, Harley threw herself into studying and gymnastics, excelling educationally and in her hobby as well. Barry was lazy and thus Harley took on the mantle of the ‘bright child’, something she was very proud of. Ambitious even in high school, Harley was able to win herself a scholarship to Gotham University on her gymnastic ability. However, it was not this that interested her as Harley had her sights set on a doctorate from the Psychology Department and would stop at nothing to get one. She was bright enough that had she applied herself, Harley could have passed with flying colours, but the allure of Gotham’s nightlife caught her and she spent her nights partying instead of studying.
The only real work she did consisted of a rather unethical study conducted on on-off boyfriend, Guy Kopski. By pretending to have committed an accidental murder, Harley studyed the effects such an secret would have on Guy, whom she 'confided in'. At first, Guy seemed to handle the stress well, but soon came apart and eventually committed suicide, unable to live with his role in a murder cover-up and yet unwilling to sell out someone he'd grown to love. The suicide didn't affect Harley in the way it should have, but she played the part of grieving lover well. She went out, getting drunk every night and being excused because she was 'hurting'. In reality, she was enjoying the recklessness and presuming Guy's suicide would give her some special treatment when it came to grading. However, when it came to her final thesis, Harley wrote it in a night, rushing herself and making mistakes. She was graded a D- and it looked like her dreams were shattered.
But Harley was not one to accept defeat easily and so she found her shortest skirt and went to see her professor, Dr Markus, making sure to lock the door behind her. A half hour and some abandoned underwear later, her grade was up to an A+ and Harley’s career was back on track. It was about this time that her mother got in contact, relaying news of how Harley’s father had been arrested for a con and she needed help with bail. Harley coldly declined, deciding to cut herself off from her past and soon her father was convicted and thrown in jail while Harley applied for an internship at Arkham Asylum.
Arkham offered Harley an opportunity to interview some of the most infamous criminal minds and she was determined to get the position. Afterall, a few secrets from a high profile inmate would be enough to form a book around and elevate Harley to fame and fortune. Driven by her ambition, Harley once again played dirty to get what she wanted - trading a night of passion with Dr Crane for a continuing internship and guaranteed job. The rather awkward affair left Harley with deep contempt for her boss and she did her best to avoid him during her internship as she worked towards her PhD, writing her final paper on her study of Guy.
Finally qualifying as a doctor, Harley immediately began work at the asylum, dealing with rather dull patients for the best part of two years before fate cut her a break. After an initial conversation through the wall of his cell, Harley was able to take on the asylum's most famed inmate, the Joker, as her patient when a colleague couldn't handle him. Harley threw herself at the case, sure it would be the one that would lead her out of Gotham, but was not anticipating the level at which she would get involved. From the start, she found the Joker fascinating but could never have imagined how that fascination would develop.
The shift in Harley's direction came the night of the Arkham Asylum fundraiser. There was already evidence to suggest that Gotham's previous White Knight, Harvey Dent, was going to create a scene on the night, but Harley hadn't anticipated a break-out on the Joker's part as well. As Dent tormented the Arkham staff he had taken as hostages, Harley was kept out of harm's way by the Joker, causing her to attach to him as a result of what she would later claim as Stockholm Syndrome. As it was, he had done a rather good job of being charming, despite the circumstances, even producing sunflowers for her that happened to be her favorite flower.
It was when the hostages and hostage-takers moved to an abandoned hotel that Harley began to sense the first real changes in her approach to life. The first came when she found herself forming a much closer attachment to the Joker that verged on romantic interest as she became jealous of Harvey's tryst with the clown. The second came when it unraveled that Crane seemed to be as insane as the inmates he treated. Her boss was revealed to be a maniac that experimented with a fear toxin on his patients and was eventually given a taste of his own medicine that caused him to suffer a cardiac arrest. Harley's lack of emotional response terrified her, and she began to think she was developing the mentality of a sociopath.
When Harvey and the Joker fled the police, Harley accompanied them, initially as a hostage but her circumstances soon changed. In the getaway car, the Joker kissed her, and Harley wasn't too surprised to find that she really didn't mind at all. Abetting the escape, she obtained a change of clothes for her kidnappers and by the time they arrived at the Ilium to hide-out, she was trusted enough to be left alone without calling the police. But the new status quo was destined to be cut short as the police raided the hotel. Worried she was about to loose her freedom and reputation, Harley quickly swallowed sleeping pills to make it appear as if she had been drugged into submission.
The ruse seemed to work and within days Harley was back at work, taking Crane's job as head doctor from him. Although at first she tried to return to her professionalism; Harley soon found herself running back into the Joker's arms. Despite having promised Harvey she would shut down Crane's experiments, she allowed them to continue and after an altercation with the patient, she even condoned Crane's work - asking him to use Harvey as a test subject.
