(Set on the same night as "Respite")
Two-Face lay awake, listening to Joker's ragged, scratchy breathing. Joker rolled over in his sleep, burrowing closer to him and resting his cheek against Two-Face's bare chest. He heard an unintelligible mumble from the sick man and his pale hands grabbed onto him almost fiercely before relaxing back into deep sleep.
Two-Face gritted his teeth. He was used to having only one emotion at a time. Love or hate. Anger or calm. If this conflict in his head and his heart was what normal people felt he wondered how there was anyone sane left in the world at all.
Perhaps there wasn't.
He slid an arm around Joker and heard a tiny sigh of contentment that did nothing to comfort Two-Face. He remembered the last night they had spent together before Joker had pushed him away; he'd had no inkling that the next day would bring such sudden and brutal change.
And now Joker was back, as if nothing had happened betwen them. He had simply walked into the apartment and demanded all the same care and attention he'd rejected before. Part of Two-Face wanted to shove Joker away, to tell him to go find another idiot to twist around his thin fingers and to break his heart instead, but he couldn't. He needed Joker. He was drawn to him with a force more powerful than he had ever felt before. No matter how this affair ended, he knew he was bound to the strange, scarred man.
When he finally fell asleep, Two-Face dreamed that Joker had torn his heart from his chest, and held it in his hands. His laughing mouth stretched as he bit into the dripping heart with razor sharp teeth.

Very early in the morning, Joker awoke. The pain in his chest had lessened considerably and his body was much less achey. It took him a moment to realize that the reason his pillow was moving was because it was Face's chest. He gently removed Face's arm and sat up, gazing down at the sleeping criminal.
Joker was not good with Feelings. He thought they were beneath him and were nothing but a nuisance. It was a constant irritation that the Dents brought out real Feelings in him. Harvey was a rock to Joker and was everything Joker wished that his father had been. Two-Face was a sounding board and a way to release his anger, frustration and lust.
Caring for them both was something he was struggling with. A tiny part of him hated himself for crawling back to them when he was ill. It was weak. He wasn't weak.
But maybe he could pretend to be weak with them. They wouldn't tell anybody.
He prodded Two-Face roughly in the ribs. "Hey, I'm awake. You need to be awake."

Two-Face jerked awake. "Wha - what?"
He scrubbed a hand over his face. "Why do I need to be awake? It's - " he fumbled for Harvey's watch on the bedside table "too damn early."
He closed his eyes again.

Joker scooted closer to Two-Face and leaned down to press his nose against Two-Face's. "Hey. Hey, talk to me. I'm awake. Would you like to watch a movie?"
He reached across for the remote and flicked the television on. Humming contentedly as he drummed his fingers on Two-Face's chest, Joker scrolled through the channels. He stopped on Animal Planet. "Face, look! Giraffes!"

Two-Face scowled. He'd almost forgotten about Joker's energy late at night. Amittedly most of the time it was the type of energy he approved of... but not when it involved Animal Planet.
He opened his eyes when Joker's nose pressed to his and glared. It didn't do any good. He pulled a pillow toards him and covered his own head with it. "Joker. I don't care about giraffes. It's too early for giraffes. It's too early for nature of any kind."
Two-Face yanked the bedclothes towards him and turned over on his side, closing his eyes again.

Joker pouted and smacked the back of Two-Face's head with the remote.
"Quit whining and pay attention to me!"

Two-Face jerked as the remote hit his head. He rolled over and struck out blindly as he pushed the blankets away. Finally he sat up. "What? What on earth type of attention can you possibly want at this time of night?... Apart from the obvious."

Joker let out a quiet 'oomph' as Two-Face hit him in the stomach. He fell back dramatically and threw an arm across his face.
"Thou dost wound me! O, the agony is too great to bare. What terrible gods have forced this fate upon my breast? I must fall. Fall, I say!"
Joker peeked at Two-Face, trying not to grin. "Good morning sunshine. Aren't you so glad you're awake? I'm so glad you're awake."

Two-Face was amused despite himself as Joker flung himself backwards. "You sound like Crane," he remarked, and settled down beside him. "Though I'd much rather be in bed with you than him."
He turned his head to the side, feeling properly awake now. "I suppose so. Why are we awake, anyway?"

Joker giggled. "Thanks, pal. I don't know why! Crane is much prettier than I am. He'd make an excellent woman."
At the question, he flung his arms out beside him and wriggled around a bit for good measure. "I dunno. I had a funny dream so I woke up and discovered that I was very much awake." He lifted his head to get a better look at Two-Face. "I'm also less ill and don't feel like I'm going to die anymore. Aren't you so excited? I'm so excited."

Two-Face grinned unpleasantly. "He does have cheekbones you could hang things off. And if I'm honest I do find myself occasionally with the urge to just bite his bottom lip. It looks delicious." He glanced to tthe side and tilted his head to murmur against Joker's mouth. "Though not as delicious as yours. You taste... " he smiled again. "Like blood and fire and blackness."
He regarded Joker's enthusiasm levelly. "Yes, dear. If you say so."

Joker chuckled and pushed Two-Face away playfully. "Oh please, you flatter me. You taste like whatever you last ate."
Joker lay quiet for a long moment as he stared up at the ceiling. Finally, he turned his head to look at Two-Face. "Would you have been sad if I had died?"

"You're such a romantic," he remarked, smiling again.
He answered deadpan: "Oh, I'd cry into my pillow every night. I'd wear a black armband and insist on two minutes silence at the start of every mob council. And I'd never be able to look at a Ronald McDonald statue again without sobbing."
Two-Face slipped an arm around Joker's waist to pull him closer but glanced at the other man with some irritation in his eyes. "Of course I'd be sad. What the hell kind of question is that?"

Joker smiled humorlessly. "I dunno. It was just something I thought of so I asked it."
He wriggled away from Two-Face and sat up, running a hand through his hair. He glanced out the window. "I don't know if I'd be sad if you died. Angry, maybe. I don't really get sad."
With a sigh, Joker pulled off the oversized shirt he'd been wearing and threw it aside. "I can't wait to be at my new place where my clothes fit and the temperature isn't weird." Joker grumbled.

Two-Face's brows drew together slightly. "You know, just for any future seductions you may be planning on, most people would get upset if you told them that. And don't try that with me, I know you better thn anyone. Better than Harvey."
Hi eyes followed the t-shirt as it sailed over to the other side of the bedroom. "What's wrong with the temperature? Too hot?" He looked almost thoughtful, but his teeth flashed in a grin for an instant . "I think you might still have a fever. Want me to take your temperature? Of course it might just get you even hotter..."
