Harvey span idly back and forth in his desk chair, his coin flicking through the air.
He wasn't ready for another relationship. He was clear on that. Olivia had left a hole in his heart that he wasn't sure he could ever fill. Everything seemed so empty without her. It really wasn't fair to ask out another woman so soon... was it?
It would be pleasant to get out of the house for an evening with some company, though...
~Harv, you're driving me insane. It's dinner, not a marriage proposal. Just go out and have some fun, will you? If I have to put up with your moping for much longer I swear I'm going to have Joker perform a lobotomy on my side of our head.~
~You're already insane.~
~Yeah, yeah. Pot, kettle. Pick up the damn phone.
Harvey smiled slightly and dialled Ruby Carter's number.

Ruby smiled as she put down the final, completed cube into the pile at her feet.
Since her night at the Iceberg Lounge, she'd worked non-stop. It was definitely over a week and she still had to place the bombs in the buildings Joker had requested. That wasn't good; who knew what Joker would do. She could only hope he hadn't taken her too seriously when she said a week. She didn't know her concentration would be elsewhere.
Elsewhere being her recent conversation with Harvey Dent. She still didn't understand how Olivia could have left him.
She sat back on her couch in her apartment and closed her eyes, sighing as the song on her iPod speakers changed. She wouldn't bring the topic of Olivia up again in conversation with him. Ruby knew all too well how much it hurt when Dan left her so much she couldn't even stand to be around her few friends!
Sitting up with a snort, Ruby walked over to her kitchen and began to pour herself a glass of water. Just as she started to take sips, her phone rang. Grumbling to herself, she picked the phone up.
"Hello?" Her voice had changed from an annoyed grumble to a sweet chirp. She picked her glass up and walked over to the couch again.

Harvey brushed off Two-Face's promptings and unconsciously clutched his coin a little tighter as he heard the click of the phone being answered.
"Ruby, Hi. It's Harvey. How are things? Joker tells me you're working for him now. Hope he isn't keeping you too busy."

Ruby smiled brightly at Harvey's voice and sat down carefully, making sure not to spill her drink.
"Hi, Harvey. I'm good thanks, busy but good. What about you? How are," she paused before deciding to continue, "...things?" She took a small gulp of cold water and placed the glass onto her coffee table. "Well, I'm behind by a few days but I've completed his total order. I just need to locate the bombs now."

Harvey heard the unspoken question behind her words and remembered how concerned she had seemed about him in the Iceberg Lounge.
"I'm fine," he said. "Thank you." He cleared his throat slightly. "I'm actually calling to try and tear you away from your work for a night. Think Joker can let you off?" he teased.
He gave a small smile "Seriously though. I'd like to take you out to dinner. Are you busy tonight?"

Ruby decided not to continue with the subject of how things were.
She laughed at his teasing. "I think he can. What's one more night anyway?" She changed hands, placing the phone in her left and bent over to pick up a cube.
"Harvey, that's very kind of you, I'd love to come to dinner with you." Spinning the bomb in her hands, Ruby stood up again. "What time?"

Harvey leaned back in his chair. "How about I run by the asylum at half seven. Where would you like to go? I'll call and get a table. Anywhere you like."
He bagan idly flicking his coin again. "You may find this hard to believe but some Maitre d's find it very hard to say no to me."

"Great. Where should I meet you? Front door?" Ruby strode into her bedroom and opened her wardrobe, already planning her outfit. She blushed with embarrassment at his question.
"Well, Harvey, you see... Uh, I haven't been out for dinner in a long time, four years long. I can barely remember the last good restaurant I went to. That makes me sound as if I'm a recluse but it's true. I know nowhere where we could go." She suddenly felt very self conscious and somewhat stupid. Although Harvey couldn't see her, her blush deepened to a darker red. "So it's back to you for choice of restaurant. Sorry." Hearing his next sentence made her stop rummaging. She smirked. "Oh really? And why is that, Mr. Dent?"

He paused for a moment to see if Two-Face was going to suggest anything, but his other self was unaccountably silent.
"Do you like Japanese food? Since the Yakuza moved into town I've got a new culinary addiction." Harvey picked up on the hesitancy in Ruby's voice, and was unpleasantly aware that he'd never realised it, but she'd been lonely... like him. Perhaps a night out would be good for her too.
He smiled to himself at the note of humour beneath her words. "Well, I used to think it was because they were afraid of being shot on the way out, but for tonight it's more that they'll be dazzled by the beauty of my dining companion."

"Mmm. Japanese food sounds really good right now. Japanese it is."
She had gone back to searching for a dress. Her hand stopped when she saw the dress that was the one. Grabbing the hanger, she pulled it out of the wardrobe and draped it across her bed. It was perfect for a dinner.
Ruby grinned and laughed. "Really? Well you flatter me, Harvey. You really do." She sat down on her bed next to her dress and stared at her nails. "So I will see you at Arkham at half 7 then?"

He smiled into the phone. "Barring Armageddon or a housecall from the Batman, absolutely. "
At evening apprached, Harvey took a cursory glance through his wardrobe and selected a pearl grey summer weight suit and a coordinating silk tie in shades of gunmetal and dull silver.
On his way to Arkham, he had his driver stop at a florist, and spent some time poring over the brightly coloured displays. He didn't want roses. Too romantic. And frankly, corny. And for goodness sake, nothing that even vaguely resembled a bridal bouquet. Not sunflowers; they were cheerful enough but they were Harley's favourite. Several coin flips later, he had selected a display of richly coloured crocuses and iris in a crystal globe-shaped vase and arranged for them to be delivered to her apartment while the two of them were out. It would be a nice surprise for Ruby on her return home; a way to round off the evening.
He arrived at Arkham prompty at half seven and strolled towards the front door of the mansion.

Ruby smiled. "See you there," and hung up. Having curled her hair, she slipped her dress* on: a dark green and cream strapless one that clung to her body and stopped just above her knee. On top, she wore a cream cardigan and paired it with dark green wedges, the heel not being too high. She didn't want to be too tall. She arrived just after half seven, always one to be a little later due to her lack of organisation. She could always say it took awhile to get there from her apartment. Ruby walked to the front door and saw Harvey. He was dressed smartly and nicely, she thought his grey number suited him rather well. Approaching, she smiled. "Hello, Harvey." *((I'm not very good at describing outfits but I found the dress: www.reese-pics.com/displayimage.php?album=235&pid=7871#top_display_media ))

(Lovely dress, Ruby!)
Harvey turned to see Ruby walking towards him. He smiled and held out ar arm to embrace her lightly, his head angling so that only the unscarred side of his face brushed her cheek.
"Ruby, you look stunning. As always." He glanced up at the gothic stonework of the mansion. "Do you know, I almost miss this place. I really must be insane."
Harvey stepped forwards and opened the car door for her.
"I had another thought about where to go for dinner. I heard about a new Chinese restuarant downtown that specialises in this special sort of do-it-yourself hot pot. Apparently there's a big cooking pot in a yin-yang shape in the middle of the table with hot red chilli stock in one side and clear chicken broth in the other. I couldn't resist making a booking at that place too. You pick, and I'll phone to cancel the other table."

Smiling back, Ruby returned the embrace and kissed his cheek. "As do you, Harvey. I like your suit." She followed his gaze and sighed. "I feel like that at times. There's just something about it. I think it's the other patients. I haven't seen Ivy in awhile..." Ruby was quite taken aback when Harvey opened the car door for her. Nobody had done that for her except her father, a thing about him which she liked. "Thank you." Her eyebrows raised in wonder at the mention of another restaurant. She loved Chinese food as much as Japanese food but that was an offer too good to miss. She nodded at Harvey. "The Chinese restaurant sounds great. Let's go there."

Harvey let his gaze meander wistfully over the ornate architectureof the building. "No, neither have I. But you know her, she's a private type. She's probably wandered off into the wilds of Robinson Park and is happily communing with nature. It would be nice to catch up, though."
He settled into the sleek black Town Car and closed the door behind them. The powerful engine purred and the driver turned towards the city centre.
"So, how are all my former cellblock hallmates?" He smirked slightly. "Crane's not causing you any trouble is he? I heard he's working for Joker now too. He's building himself quite the criminal empire; I'm proud of him."
